Dr. Sanjeev Kumar

Dr. Kumar removes a large tumor at surgery during a life saving operation.

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar-A Leading Pelvic Surgeon

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, MD was the 8th most prolific robotic surgeon in the U.S.A. by volume, according to the Baptist Cancer Center annual report of 2017. As noted in the excerpts from the Baptist cancer center annual report in 2017-Dr. Kumar joined the Baptist Cancer Center in Memphis TN in 2013 as a division director of gynecologic oncology. Dr. Kumar’s work at Baptist involved many fronts, particularly helping morbidly obese women suffering from lack of care options. In 2017, Dr. Kumar became the 8th busiest surgeon in the US using the robotic surgery approach in gynecologic cancers. According the Dr. Kumar, Robotics is the future of surgery as it gives very reliable results and reduces the human hand variation in the art of surgery.

By the 3rd quarter of 2017, Dr. Kumar had performed 285 robotic procedures with 95 percent of patients considered morbidly obese. Often rejected as candidates for surgery due to weights exceeding 400 pounds, these patients have few options due to greater risk of wound infection, blood loss and pulmonary complications.

Through his dedication to training on the robotic technologies, developing and training his OR teams, and educating patients about the risks, he created hope for this particular population of women. Dr. Kumar said-“Our program is functioning really well. We have established a culture and training by building a system and the team.

Dr. Kumar also started a novel program of HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) for treatment of advanced and recurrent ovarian and primary peritoneal cancers while at the Baptist Cancer Center. He also participated with the NCORP grant through research studies. It is noteworthy that the HIPEC program started by Dr. Kumar in Baptist in 2017 was one of the newest services at the Baptist hospital.

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar was the first surgeon to perform a robotic cervical cerclage in the city of Memphis on a outpatient basis leading to discharge of the patient on the same day. This operation was called as a breakthrough by the local media as it helped local people in the memphis to achieve the dreams of having a family. Before he performed this operation in the memphis community, the patients and their family had to travel far away in other cities to get this operation done. They will go to Chicago in the North and Dallas in the south. Once Dr. Kumar started performing these surgeries in the City of memphis, the crucial and novel treatment could be provided in the the city itself, helping the local community.

Thank you letter from the CEO of the Baptist Hospital in Tipton, TN for Dr. Kumar for the selfless act of saving a life of a bleeding patient.

Dr. Kumar trains the residents from the University of Tennessee, Obstetrics and Gynecology program in Robotic Surgery skills.

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar-Surgical Teacher

Dr. Kumar enjoyed teaching students and residents. Residents routinely rotated with Dr. Kumar and learned skills needed to conduct advanced pelvic surgery from him. He trained residents from University of Tennessee in Memphis campus from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Kumar also taught the residents how to perform robotic hysterectomy & complex pelvic surgery utilizing robotic and laparoscopic equipment. Dr. Kumar routinely helped other physicians in complex surgical cases as and when needed; often in the middle of the night on a voluntary basis.

Dr. Kumar worked with the Medicos group which is famous for looking after underprivileged populations. The medicos group provides care to indigenous population during pregnancy and afterwards. Dr. Kumar was the surgical expert that was on backup call for the medicos group for several years in Memphis Tennessee. During this time whenever there was a surgical emergency and the Medicos group physicians needed help; they will call Dr. Kumar and he will scrub in to help out, often saving several patient lives during this process. Dr. Kumar also provided valuable teaching to the physicians of the Medicos group as well as the fellowship program run by the same group. The Medicos group provides valuable services to otherwise unreserved population of patients. A large fraction of these patients speak spanish and the prevalence of pelvic pathology is very high in this group of patients.

Dr. Kumar also trained residents from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from Meharri UniversityIn Nashville Tennessee. This group of residents will rotate in Memphis with Memphis physicians and surgeons and during these rotations these residence routinely worked with Dr. Kumar at the Methodist Germantown Hospital learning valuable skills in pelvic surgery from him. These skills included cases such as robotic hysterectomy, ectopic pregnancy resections and cancer surgeries in the female pelvis.

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar’s contributions to the MidSouth community

Dr. Kumar extended cutting edge modern care to the MidSouth community through a chain of clinics with the Baptist Healthcare Corporation. He established the cancer clinics in 3 states and serviced the underserved population of the region.

Excerpt from the Baptist cancer center annual report in 2016

Dr. Kumar, while working with the Baptist Medical group, extended new and cutting edge technologies to the Midsouth region. In the annual report of the 2016 from the baptist cancer center, the organization noted-that Dr. Kumar devoted about 70 percent of his time in operating on patients with gynecologic cancers, primarily focusing on the minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Kumar, also focused his efforts on a newer form of chemotherapy for cancer, the HIPEC. In the HIPEC approach, the surgeon bathes the abdominal cavity of a patient with warm chemotherapy solution immediately after the surgical resection of a cancer. This program was spearheaded by Dr. Kumar at the Baptist cancer center and he provided these services to the patients in the Midsouth region via the Baptist healthcare network. A central philosophy of Dr. Kumar is to bring the care closer to home, where the patient lives, hence he provided care in Jonesboro AR, Memphis TN, Oxford MS and Southaven MS as well; through the chain of satellite clinics.

A thank you note from the CEO of the Baptist Hospital in Tipton, TN. Dr. Kumar drove to Tipton many a times to help in surgical emergencies to save patient lives on a voluntary basis.

Cheritable Works

Heart to heart foundation supports free heart surgery in children. Sunil Gavaskar, a legendary cricket player from India works to fundraise for the heart to heart foundation. Dr. Sanjeev Kumar worked with the heart to heart foundation with generous donations to help fund the cause for the life saving surgeries for children in need, along with Mr. Sunil Gavaskar in Memphis, TN.

Charitable Care

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar believed every patient in our community needs the beast healthcare, irrespective to the type of insurance they have. Following this principle, he provided tremendous healthcare to patients even if they did not have healthcare insurance. In his practice, he never turned away any patients based on their paying capability. Frequently, Dr. Kumar performed lifesaving surgery on patients who did not have insurance or paying capability. Attached is example of one such patient, where Dr. Kumar performed cancer surgery on uninsured patient free of cost. This grateful patient, C.J. writes-“to each and everyone that has touched my life, words can not express how much I appreciate how thankful I am, how grateful I am, charity care you have shine on me giving me glory and brilliance in the lord. I am a witness of all the amazing things you do, I thank the lord and charity care for allowing me to see another day. God Bless.”

Charitable Donations

Dr. Kumar generously donated funds for the scholarship program for the Ms Tennessee Volunteer scholarship program. His contributions helped fund study of deserving students.

Donations to the Prison Professors Charitable Corporation.

Dr. Kumar makes monthly donation to the Prison Professors Charitable Corporation. Through these donations, he helps deliver educational programs in prisons and jails that build accountability, goal setting and practical skills for reentry. It also helps facilitate reentry support by serving as a bridge to community connections after the release. These donations also help provide scholarships and paid assignments that give returning citizens the opportunity to rebuild stability and independence. https://www.prisonprofessors.org/
